What Members Thought

I dug Cherie Priest’s Boneshaker, but I wanted so much more.
I dug Blighted Seattle and the Outskirts, but I wanted more detail in the former and more time in the latter.
I dug the Rotters, but I wanted more rot, more zombie madness, and more exploration of their potential ability to communicate and problem solve.
I dug the pseudo-history and Hale Quarter, the fictional biographer, but I wanted more installments of his history.
I dug the back story of Leviticus Blue, but I wanted to be convinced th ...more

I find myself with very mixed feelings about Boneshaker. It has received some positive reviews and there are elements of it that I like a lot. But something is missing.
I find I'm getting a little tired of the Steampunk obsession and also of zombies, but their use in this book is actually quite effective. This is really quite a small story in terms of scale, but it is anchored by a believable and strong female character who is not the traditional steampunk heroine. I listened to the audiobook. There are two narrators, and they switch back and forth whe the point of view changes. So... this book. It was ok. The premise was really interesting - it's a mish mash of western, steampunk, and zombies. Unfortunately, the characters themselves are pretty dull, and they fail to live up to the promise of the backstory.
I made it halfway through before realizing that I didn't have a clear sense of the characters (and what sense I had was likely due to the narrators - ...more

There are three fictional elements I actively dislike: Dystopias, contagion zombies, and post-apocalyptic survival. This is a good book which, unfortunately for me, flirts heavily with all three. I nearly abandoned this book on multiple occasions, but I stuck it through to the end. Even with all the things I personally didn't like about it, it's well-written and the audiobook narration is a delight. Recommended for anyone who likes steampunk, airships, or zombies, and who doesn't have my hang-up

I am very conflicted about this book. There was nothing wrong with it, per se, but I felt that it came off a bit weak. The plot was great, steampunk + zombies + catastrophe in early Seattle, WA. The execution of the story has left me wanting. I can't put my finger on what was wrong or missing. I would still recommend this to my friends who enjoy a good steampunk novel. I'll ponder a little more about what would have made this 5 stars for me...
