I remembered reading this in high school, and being captivated by it. I'm glad I took the time to re-read it.
This is a wonderful fantasy book. Not perfect, by any means, but it's very easy to overlook the few flaws it does have in favor of the engaging story, unique setting, and epic characters.
The novel focuses on a band of characters attempting to free their land (a peninsula painstakingly based on Renaissance-era Italy, a wonderful break from the usual fantasy norm) from the thrall of a pair ...more

Tigana- I wanted to love this book a lot more then I actually did. It is beautifully written and the plot is engaging and thought provoking but I could walk away from the book for days at a time without needing to pick it up again and the female characters bothered me.
Basic plot. Two sorcerers conquer a country, dividing it between them. Except since that country was already divided into districts they find it rather easy (think Renaissance Italy). Brandin of Ygrath, one of the sorcerers, upon l ...more

This is one of my favorite books. Guy Kay has his ups and downs, but in my opinion he really shines here.
It's a very poetic story, almost Shakespearian in certain ways. Not your typical epic fantasy. Highly recommended!

I immensely enjoyed this book. It was also quite a big lesson in patience for me. In the beginning, I was somewhat frustrated, because I was in a rush for "something" to happen, and for me to just instantly understand the world and know who all of the characters were. I think that's more of a reaction caused by the books I've read leading up to this one than anything else.
I finally told myself to just relax and enjoy it, and I'll get there when I get there. Once I did that, I found myself comple ...more

Tigana is really one beautifully crafted story. However, in the beginning the language and the way the book is set out made it hard for me to get into. Also, Guy Gavriel Kay can be excessively descriptive. But once I managed to put everyone in their place, it became a lot less confusing and I really loved the world he built, as well as the sudden turns off the path.
And strangely despite enjoying the book, it left me feeling kind of sad.

This book was well established but lost something to it as the author tried to grapple with some very complex issues concerning national identity and pride. Some sections of were a wonderful read while others made me want more. A valiant effort but, for me, it fell short.
