It's hard to believe this is a debut novel - the plot is intricate and tight, the pacing is taut, the characters and the world they inhabit richly drawn. The book tells the story of the rise and fall of Locke Lamora and the Gentleman Bastards - the City of Camorr's most accomplished and creative thieves and con artists. Its the first in a series but this book wraps up well and does not leave any huge loose ends.

And did I mention it's hilarious? It is but it is also at times quite dark. It's a fu

Terrific storytelling. It's like a fantasy thriller. I loved the dialogue. Some lines flirt with cheesiness but do not go too far over. Big fan if Lynch, and looking forward to his next book in the Gentlemen Bastard series.

Recommended.

This story revolves around a group of thieves known as the Gentleman Bastards, which I have to admit, is a fairly cool name for a group of thieves.

I feel as though I wanted to enjoy it more than I did. I can't really put my finger on the reason I wasn't entirely rapt with it. There were some interesting characters, but I guess at times it felt a little too focused on one small group of people. Really enjoyed this mysery/con-man book. Got a little "loose" at the end... I was wishing he had one more con to work. ...more

I really wanted to mark this 4.5 stars. I would have given it 5 stars but it feels about 100 or 150 pages too long. Although, I can honestly say I don't know what I would remove.

I loved it. Once I got to the last 100 pages, I absolutely could not put it down. The world building is excellent and the characters are fantastic.

I think it was even better the second time.

This is a very well written book, but I just couldn't get into it. It was always easy to abandon and then I would have to force myself to start it again. I've officially given up. I really don't care how the story ends. Just not my type of book. ...more
