TLDR - Dragon Rider of Pern without the assault.
I quite enjoyed this book. Though I would probably give it more of a 3.5 if I had the choice.
I think the biggest problem with it, was that I listened to it on audible. While the reader did an incredible job of narrating, I found certain parts very uncomfortable to listen too. That's on me for sure. I prefer reading those parts myself (you know which parts I mean) and then I can skip the bits that really end up just sounding silly (to me).

2.5 stars. Maybe it's as case of lowered expectations, but this was better than I thought it was going to be.
The author's writing was fine - not lyrical and poetic, but serviceable. The plot was pretty standard for a fantasy romance, but nothing bad. I would say that overall, my reaction is that I just didn't care enough. I wasn't attached to any of the characters other than the dragons. This was a gripping and compelling read, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It has danger, dragons, death, and romance. I cannot wait for the next book to come out!
