What Members Thought
TLDR - Dragon Rider of Pern without the assault.
I quite enjoyed this book. Though I would probably give it more of a 3.5 if I had the choice.
I think the biggest problem with it, was that I listened to it on audible. While the reader did an incredible job of narrating, I found certain parts very uncomfortable to listen too. That's on me for sure. I prefer reading those parts myself (you know which parts I mean) and then I can skip the bits that really end up just sounding silly (to me).

2nd time through:
I liked this even better on a re-read.
Original review:
I liked this quite a bit. I really could have done without the sex scenes (and then the hyper fixation on it once they started), especially listening to this on audio. Honestly, that's what bumped this down to 4 stars for me. Just not my thing, although had I been reading it in print it would have been lots easier to skip like I usually do. ...more

I have lots of thoughts lol. Big picture:
We've got three stories going here. That's fine. Let's see how they stand on their own:
1. The romance and smut were so CRINGE. Horrible. One star. I've read a lot of romance and a lot of smut and there isn't much I've read that's worse than this.
2. The underlying story, meaning political intrigue and secrets, is doled out more slowly than it should be, but I grudgingly appreciate that there even is intrigue and secrets given the puerile romantic plot. In ...more

I didn’t want to enjoy this book. I didn’t want to be so involved with it. But I read it over the course of a weekend (pacing myself, or so I thought), and I so enjoyed this and can’t wait for the second. Violet is a likeable, smart character who taps into her own individuality to grow and thrive, along with the ramshackle group of people in her wing. This book was so much fun. The world building was great. The character development was great. The twists and turns, while I was able to gauge them

I really didn't want to read this book, but I really enjoyed it. It was fun and kept my interest.

A mishmash of every popular fantasy novel written in the last few decades. Game of Thrones (without the world building but plenty of violence and similar villains), Hunger Games (school for future soldiers and competitive games), romantasy (romance at a YA level but with some eye rolling sex), Harry Potter (magic that manifests uniquely for each student when paired with their dragon). Also, the objectification of Xalen by Violet in this novel is not OK, and the reverse would have critics up in a

My only disappointment? Book 2 isn't out yet! I really, really enjoyed this book and can't wait to continue the story.
