Well what do you know, this lived entirely up to the hype. Small, physically weak Violet expected to become a scribe (a keeper of history) until her mother--a formidable general in the fascist (with dragons!) military--forces her into fascist dragon rider school where she'll likely die, if not by her fellow students' hands, then by the dragons themselves who value strength over all else.

The dragons are cool.
The pace of the book was speedy.
The audiobook version I listened to was a little extra, which I did not enjoy. Too many grunting noises during the steamy scenes, for example.
The characters are kind of flat and the world-building felt all kinds of meh.

This book is hot garbage walking. Writers can produce good books for a younger audience without dipping to this level of thinly clad romance writing and terrible foreshadowing. I rate this book as one star - which is one too many.

Oh my gosh, THIS BOOK! So hard to put down! A dangerous school for dragon riders, friends, love, peril, magic, secrets! Too much to list here. Read this for an emotional and thrilling fantasy ride.
