What Members Thought

When constable Peter Grant takes testimony from a ghost who witnessed a rather brutal murder he unwittingly sets off a chain of events that lead to him becoming apprenticed to The Last Wizard of England and discovering a whole magical world existing right alongside modern London.
I really enjoyed the sense of place this book has. It takes London history and geography and uses them to enhance the story. The book also has a good amount of humor and definitely has a darker edge in parts.

If I was to give a quick description of this book I'd probably call it a UK version of the Harry Dresden series. But that doesn't really give it the credit it deserves.
Ben Aaronovitch may be known to some of you as the script writer for a couple of solid Doctor Who episodes (Remembrance of the Daleks and Battlefield). Just couldn't get past the treatment of women. Had there been a point to the non-stop gaze (like the protagonist confronting how he sees women as a point of growth), maybe. But this is just presented as part of a character we're supposed to identify with.
Not going to bother with the next in the series - I don't need the aggravation. What a shame. ...more
