I avoided this series because of the comparisons to The Dresden Files, which is not my favorite. Well, I was wrong, and this series is delightful!

When constable Peter Grant takes testimony from a ghost who witnessed a rather brutal murder he unwittingly sets off a chain of events that lead to him becoming apprenticed to The Last Wizard of England and discovering a whole magical world existing right alongside modern London.
I really enjoyed the sense of place this book has. It takes London history and geography and uses them to enhance the story. The book also has a good amount of humor and definitely has a darker edge in parts.

Probably more like 3.5* but I was pleased enough to immediately order the second Peter Grant book after finishing this one.
A novel set in London – with magic and a surrounding cast of anthropomorphic entities – was bound to tickle my fancy. A story told from a male point-of view was a nice change from my recently YA-heavy reading diet, although Peter’s hopeful focus on sexual exploits tended to get on my nerves.
