What Members Thought

I think with this very awesome novel, I may have to stop whining about being disappointed by Urban Fantasy. It’s the most recent in a string of Urban Fantasies I have really enjoyed (The Rook by Daniel O’Malley, The Kate Daniels Series Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews) and which surprised me with a unique approach and an irresistible (to me) good-naturedly sarcastic humor.

Good fun for fans of The Dresden Files and Sorcerer to the Crown. Peter Grant is a newly minted police constable who finds himself apprenticed to a magician and embroiled in murders involving ghosts and mythical beings including mediating conflicts between competing river spirits. The details of London history and geography made the story rich and specific.

Very funny mystery for fans of the Doctor Who series (written by a writer for the series.) If you like smart ass policemen who don't find it odd to be interviewing ghosts and encountering magic as they try to unravel a series of odd murders, this book is for you. His writing reminds me of the Laundry File novels of Charles Stross, with similarly weird apparitions and humor. After I finish this one, I'm definitely reading Moon Over Soho!
