What Members Thought

Well, I'm always looking for a great Urban fantasy book series, and this one is another one I'll be following with joy! Very much in the style of Harry Dresden, and my other fave, the Alex Verus series. This series is set in modern-day London, and features a black male lead character, who's a cop, and finds himself drafted into the magical investigation unit arm of the police. I love the sensibility of this book, it's incredibly dark at the same time, quippy! The worldbuilding is very interestin

If Jake Peralta of Brooklyn Nine Nine was British and mixed-race, he could easily be Peter Grant. Well, Grant was less cheeky but I got the same vibe. Definitely loved his character and his development as a wizard. No, no, this is no rip-off Harry Potter story. It's more proper urban fantasy, mystery/detective story kind of thing. We have some supers here, ghosts, vampires, river deities (lots of them) and other creatures I don't know yet. Fun adventures, great pacing, cool backstories, and an a

A fun, light read. Suffers a bit from what may be a symptom of first-book syndrome - the 1st person narrator really wants you to understand that he is a Heterosexual Male and he has Heterosexual Male Thoughts. However the world PC Peter Grant steps into (with refreshingly minor denial) is compelling enough to get me to add the next book in the series to my Want To Read pile. I look forward to learning more about the Folly, the Arrangement, and the history of the supernatural in London.

Good fun for fans of The Dresden Files and Sorcerer to the Crown. Peter Grant is a newly minted police constable who finds himself apprenticed to a magician and embroiled in murders involving ghosts and mythical beings including mediating conflicts between competing river spirits. The details of London history and geography made the story rich and specific.
