What Members Thought

Police procedural/urban fantasy about a London cop who gets recruited into a little-known division of the department dealing with the strange and magical. The story is great fun and the characters are interesting, flawed, and more vulnerable than the protagonists of many stories in similar genre territory. I'll be following this series.

A fun, light read. Suffers a bit from what may be a symptom of first-book syndrome - the 1st person narrator really wants you to understand that he is a Heterosexual Male and he has Heterosexual Male Thoughts. However the world PC Peter Grant steps into (with refreshingly minor denial) is compelling enough to get me to add the next book in the series to my Want To Read pile. I look forward to learning more about the Folly, the Arrangement, and the history of the supernatural in London.

I've heard this described as Harry Potter grew up and joined the police which is kind of accurate but it definitely has a different feel that J.K. Rowlings stuff.
This is definitely one of my new all time favorite series and I'll be watching this writer from now on. ...more

Good book- 3.5 stars. It was fun, solid writing, but nothing substantial, urban fantasy with a cop bent. One line I did love and will steal:"Birds got to fly, fish got to swim, fools and policemen got to rush in."

I heard about this book from Nancy Pearl, and it's just as good as she promised. My only complaint is that there aren't more books by this author yet.
Update/FYI: The audiobook is super good, too. ...more
