What Members Thought

90% of Pandora's Star irked the crap out of me. First, it just goes on and on and on. It's seems like a bunch of stories pieced together with no real connection. Many of the storylines never even go anywhere. Hamilton does a phenomenal job of over-describing everything. It gets mind-numbing.
Second, the sexism really annoyed the heck out of me. I'm not usually one to scream "sexism", but Hamilton can't resist talking about any female character's looks and about how some male character would like ...more

My problem with this massive half-an-epic was two-fold. First, with the exception of Paula Mayo and Ozzie, I found none of the characters personally interesting. To compound that, there was no character growth. Mayo learned things that she had not know before, but who she was stayed the same throughout. (To be fair, that would be one of her character traits, but still...)
The other main problem was that I just did not care about most of what happened. Justine spent hours (of reading time) flying ...more

Pandora's Star recently appeared on a "most popular" science fiction list using reddit as its source. I have had the book for a while, including a paperback version that became part of my beach reading in mid-May. It's a monster of a book and one of two in a duology.
The story starts with the spotting of two stars that disappear. Some investigation determines that artificial barriers were activated around the stars. Why? Did some alien within the systems need to be contained or were they protecti ...more

3 1/2 Stars.
Enjoyed the story. Takes two premises and runs with it:
1. Rejuvenation/Re-Life'ing is (mostly) mainstreamed. This implies a good bit of immortality. A lot of reviews complain that the culture wasn't much different between present day and 24th century. But with a lot of people who were born now still being around, I can see how culture would move slower than normal.
2. Rapid expansion due to worm holes. Society has spread out through many planets (which is good because of #1 above). D ...more
