What Members Thought

Meh. I made it halfway through, but nothing was happening. The characters themselves felt less like real people are more like archetypes (Glokta was the only interesting character for me, but I wouldn't call him sympathetic exactly!) It was all rather grim, with unlikable characters and a slightly distressing amount of gore. I get what the author was going for, but I think it's just not my type of fantasy. Enjoyed this book despite it being filled with despicable people. But I think what makes them bearable is that they change and though not good, they aren't really bad either, or are trying to get better.
The book is a strange lesson in appreciating the small things in life. =D
I listened to it in audio book and the reading was excellent. Only the reader says a few words very strangely. Grimaced is such an example, he pronounces it grim-aced. Rather jarring. ...more
