Why hello old school fantasy! Long time no see. I see that you still have dwarves of Moria, beautiful elves living in trees, farm boys turns great warriors, plucky princess and overwhelmingly likable characters. Oh and a cute dragon pet.

This book was a bit of a nostalgia trip -- it came out in the 1980's, so it's around the Sword of Shannara time. It hits a lot of tropes that are a bit hackneyed today but weren't so well-worn back then -- there's an orphan boy with unusual magic, there are girls without much personality beyond flirting with boys who suddenly astonish everyone by wanting to learn swordplay (not that she's any good at it), there's even a short cut through a mountain led by a dwarf who warns them of dangerous thin

My rating is closer to 3.5 stars, but I bumped it up to 4 because overall I did like the concept of the aliens, and the characters were, in general, likable, sympathetic, and decent.
