You need to read and appreciate this on its own terms. It's a 200 page novella, and never promises more than what it is — an epic, epistolary, sapphic romance with fantastical sci-fi time travel trappings. If you're looking for a hard sci-fi with well defined time travel rules, this isn't for you. Things are described in simile, metaphor, allegory, and through the characters' feelings expressed in their letters, but never in any concrete detail. I adored this book, even if I wasn't quite clear on the logistics of the plot. I loved the characters, the writing, the details, the scenery . . . I mean, basically everything. I loved it. It's awesome. You should read it.

Four stars for the prose, which is amazing. I'm a bit less sold on the story, but I'd likely have to read the book again just to pin down those feelings. This book, mostly an epistolary novel, is very dense and there is virtually no introductory infodumping; you have to figure it all out and put it together as you go. I wasn't all that clear on just what the war is about in the first place, but I'm not sure that's entirely the point here.
