It's no surprise that this novel won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Bacigalupi creates a whole universe in the cramped city streets of a near-future Thailand. The mechanics of a world where food production is tightly controlled and genetic manipulation is commonplace are not spelled out through endless exposition but rather through the lives of the characters as they struggle to improve their lot against the background of a simmering revolution. This is beautifully written. Everything works. I am just dystopia'ed out and could not find it in me to like this book this time. I may come back to it at some point to give it more a fair shake, not have it be the fifth in a series of dark dystopic worlds. ...more
