I loved Bacigalupi's grim vision of the future, which was (for me) totally unique from other dystopian works I've read. While there's some similarities to the genetically-engineered invasive species of Oryx and Crake, the concept of evil Monsanto-like seed companies laying waste to the biosphere to pad their bottom lines seemed totally original and creepily plausible. A Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards winner, how could I resist a read? The future is grim. Calories are currency, global warming has reduced much of the land to water and edible food is plague-prone. It's no surprise that this novel won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Bacigalupi creates a whole universe in the cramped city streets of a near-future Thailand.
