What Members Thought

There are some books that are called "classics," but you don't really understand why until you read it and feel that you've been changed. You know, for certain, that even though the themes have been played again and again, that the story is as everlasting as the bricks in an ancient abbey.

This book was many things. First and foremost it was a Post Apocalypse novel made up of three related novellas.
The first novella, "Fiat Homo" is about the time six hundred years after nuclear armageddon has blasted everything back to pre-industrial revolution times. It is the story of a monk, Brother Frances, who finds, with a bit of help from a pilgrim (who is the only recurring character in the novel as he is the mythical "Wandering Jew", the buried remains of a fallout shelter and the remain ...more

Truly a masterpiece and a classic of post-apocalyptic science fiction. However, I can also understand why the author never published anything else and eventually committed suicide. The scope and density of the book will most certainly require a further reading if not several further readings. If "1984", "Brave New World", and "Stranger in a Strange Land" are favorites of yours; then I recommend "A Canticle for Leibowitz".
