Uprooted has been one I actively avoided since it came out, because the hype was very big and I just sort of wanted it to die down a bit before I tried reading it. I didn’t want a bunch of random reviews praising it rattling around in my head while I was trying to form own opinions. I’m glad I did because I went into this one fresh and curious, and it was so good!

Easily the best fantasy novel I've read in many years. I really like Novik's Temeraire series, but I occasionally find them a bit staid; in this book, she's mastered the alchemy of writing a suspenseful, fast-paced period drama. Elements of high-fantasy adventure, gruesome horror, and a surprisingly steamy bit of romance sit perfectly atop a backdrop of fascinating folklore, and nothing feels imbalanced or overwrought as the story moves from one act to another.

This is fantastic. It's Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty with a dash of Baba Yaga mixed up with original fantasy to make this amazing story. I loved this so much. Devoured this in one sitting because I could not put it down.

3-3.5 stars. Predictable and could have been shorter.
Enchanting. I devoured this book in a single sitting.
3.5 to a 4. I was drawn more towards the 4, so I went with it. Yet, parts felt rushed and odd at times.
Basically: This would have been an AMAZING 2-3 book series. Whhhhhhhhy??? It wouldn't have be rushed, sexual tension could have grown deeper and deeper, and just more general awesomeness in this world could be explored. WE COULD HAVE HAD IT ALL. I weep (lol) over the loss of how awesome it could have been as a series. Why God. Why. ...more
