Just finished this very good book. At the halfway point, I was at 5 stars. This was book and story was unique in every way, reminding me of what Brandon Sanderson has been able to accomplish. It then started to seem "forced". I am unsure of any good way to describe how it faltered for me. However, it ended in a good way and recovered. One of the most innovative fantasy novels I have read in years, at least in terms of subject matter. For much of the past 15 years, fantasy has been in a rut dug deep by the likes of George R. R. Martin, so kudos to Bennett for jumping out of that rut and trundling off in a new direction. He tries (and mostly succeeds) to do for fantasy what Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light did for science fiction several decades ago. In City of Stairs, Robert Jackson Bennett has created a world that is original and fascinating, characters that are flawed yet sympathetic, and a story that engrosses the reader while providing food for thought long after the last page has been read. There are many mysteries in this book, starting with the murder that brings our protagonist to Bulikov, the eponymous City of Stairs, and ranging up to the truth of history and the very nature of reality.
