I bounced off this a few years ago, but gave it another go, having seen the movie (which seems to bear a tangential relationship to this book). I thought the setting was in Florida, but there doesn't seem to be any actual physical setting for this nightmare. Characters without names, only jobs; haunted structures; presaged deaths and random transformations. There was no infidelity here, just a dissolution of the relationship between an extrovert and an introvert. I started book two but have to m ...more

I find it interesting that where most people seemed to find this book creepy and horrific, I found it to be almost serene in nature. I think I have a similar personality to the main character, the enjoyment of being alone. Yes, some weird and funky things were going on, but I was never concerned by them. I'll admit I was a bit shocked when the main character did that one thing to the surveyor. It seemed a bit out of character. Though I think this speaks to how much information the narrator was w ...more

Maybe 3.5 for me. I really liked this going in. I had heard categorized as dystopian before reading, but was pleased to find it much more of something like an ecological horror story. The set up was interesting, and reminded me of a gothic horror, in that I couldn't fully trust the narrator or any of the background information she had. However, toward the end things petered out and there wasn't much of a pay off. Still want to continue with the series, but we'll see. ...more

Only read this if you are ok not really ever knowing what is going on. Creepy, well-described and imaginative. I also was really into the biologist narrator. I still don’t know what was going on here.

Four women, a Biologist, an Anthropologist, a Surveyor, and a Psychologist set out on the 12th mission to survey Area X which has been closed off for the last 30 years. Nature has taken over Area X and things are not what they seem. Told from the point of view of the biologist, we slowly find out what happened. I really enjoyed this book, it's a quick and suspenseful read. On to the next in the series! ...more

Super atmospheric weird tale with a tense ending straight out of Lovecraft (except our narrator doesn't faint at the sight of the unfathomable creature). Will read the next book for sure. ...more
