It's been nearly 20 years since I read The Joy Luck Club for the first time. I was in my teen years searching for meaning in my world's duality; being Korean and being American. For the most part, The Joy Luck Club helped me know that I wasn't the only person struggling with identity in a country that has a very big personality. However, I'm much older now. In fact, I'm as old as the adult daughters in this book. And what I found is that I related more to the book in a whole different way.

Although this book took me way longer than usual to get through, I ended up really enjoying it. Its portrayals of the relationships between mothers and daughters from both sides was absolutely beautiful, real, and funny at times. It made me think of my own mother, and my future daughter, and what I’ll be passing on. As I was reading, I was already looking forward to re-reading, because I found myself flipping back and forth constantly trying to figure out who was who’s mother/daughter. I can’t w
