Whew! I feel like I just finished a crash course on the political philosophy of the French Revolution. Magnificent in scope and monstrous in detail. The core story featuring Valjean and Cosette is sad, touching and ultimately unfulfilling. Human depravity and maligned rectitudes infect the proletariat and bourgeois alike - just not necessarily in the same manner - leading Valjean to lead a life full of pain, suffering, fear and self-damnation.
