When I needed a book with a "Motherhood" tag and saw Room on the list I decided to take the opportunity to reread it. I originally read it years ago after avoiding it because I found the whole concept so deeply disturbing. (view spoiler)

Jack is turning five when he wakes up in Room - the only world he knows, where he spends the days with Ma - days she's filled with activities. In the night he sleeps inside Wardrobe, out of sight of the nightly visitor he's dubbed Old Nick. But as Jack get's older, it becomes more and more difficult to control life in such a confined space and she hatches a desperate plan for escape. Outside turns out to be just as challenging.

Normally I would steer clear of any story narrated by a young child (in this case Jack, age 5) because it usually seems so contrived but this was really well done. The subject matter, the multi-year imprisonment of a young woman in a backyard shed, was a difficult one to approach but Jack's voice brought a different perspective to a horrifying time.
