3 stars. Fun and cheesy start to a very interesting series.

Let me just start off by saying that I absolutely love Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing. It's so much fun and refreshing. I love the voice she gives to her characters and how all of her characters stand on their own. All of the main characters I felt had so much personality and I loved that. I also loved the 'relationship' between Katy and Daemon. I wouldn't classify it as a romance because my goodness these two stayed at each others th 3 stars. Let me just start off by saying that I absolutely love Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing. It's so much fun and refreshing. I love the voice she gives to her characters and how all of her characters stand on their own. All of the main characters I felt had so much personality and I loved that. I also loved the 'relationship' between Katy and Daemon. I wouldn't classify it as a romance because my goodness these two stayed at each others throats. That was refreshing, the fact that it wasn't centered around them getting together.

On the flip side though, the only thing that kept this from getting a higher rating was the similarities to Twilight. It was just way too much. I think my 16 year old self would've been okay with that, but me now it just grinded on my nerves. Honestly, some of the scenes felt completely lifted from Twilight only with different characters. I don't know, I just could've done without all of that.

Katy is my new best friend in my head. Seriously, she was such a fantastic character. I loved that she was a book blogger and a huge reader. I related to that aspect of her character a lot. I also loved her attitude and sass. She was brash and didn't let anyone walk all over her. The way she went toe to toe with Daemon and never backed down was admirable. She was fierce and brave. When she stepped in and stabbed that Arum I was jumping up and down with joy. Yeah, she's pretty much a boss.

Daemon is such a rude, unapologetic, egotistical jackass and I love him with all of my being. It's not that he wasn't in the book enough because he is but I still wanted more. I really wanted a chapter or two from his point of view just to get in his head and see how he thought. I love how protective he was of Dee even if he did go about the wrong way for the most part; you know his intentions were good. The fact that he remained an asshole to Katy throughout the entire novel was great to me. I don't think I would've liked if he would've flipped a switch all of a sudden and been nice to her. It just doesn't seem like him at all. Team asshole Daemon for life!

Dee, Daemon's twin sister, was so adorable. I loved her. She had an innocence to her but she was also a badass when she needed to be. I want more about her character as well.

Overall, this was a fun start to the series. Don't let the hideous covers put you off, give it a read and enjoy. ...more

I gave this 4.5 stars and rounded to 4.

I normally don’t read science fiction, especially when it involves aliens. However, this book was recommended to me last year, and it did have sort of an appeal to it. I am surprised to say that I actually liked it and have now purchased book 2 on my Kindle. Take Twilight and add an alien element and you have Obsidian. This book is refreshing and will give you a whole new outlook on sci-fi.

This has been on my TBR for years. It was a good start to the series, and I’m planning to continue with it. There wasn’t a lot of backstory for Daemon and his sister, and I really hope the next one provides more information.

The narrator pronounces Daemon as “demon.” Had I been reading a printed copy, I would have read it as “DAY-mon.” Not sure which is correct.

Seine Schwester Dee freundet sich umgehend mit ihr an, doch ihr Bruder versetzt Katy ein ums andere Mal eine verbale Breitseite. In so einem kleinen Ort ist es aber unmöglich sich aus dem Weg zu gehen und so haben die beiden ein Talent immer wieder aneinander zu geraten. Als Deamon Katy das Leben rettet, geht ein wenig seiner Energie auf sie über und für den Feind leuchtet sie nun wie eine Wunderkerze in dunkler Nacht. Da bleibt nur eins und zwar Rundum Überwachung von dem verhassten Nachbar.

Als Leser der Twilight gelesen hat, kann man gar nicht umhin Parallelen zu ziehen. Attraktiver, unnahbarer Junge mit übernatürlichen Fähigkeiten, wirkt unfreiwillig anziehend auf schüchternen, introvertierten Blaustrumpf, der sich ihrer eigenen Attraktivität nicht bewusst ist. Hier sind es halt keine Vampire, sondern Aliens. Wie bei Twilight hatte ich so einige Schwierigkeiten mit Obsidian. Es hat ebenso viele Längen und langschweifige Erklärungen bis wirklich mal etwas Spannendes passiert. Genervt haben mich auch die rüden Zurückweisungs- bzw. Annäherungsversuche von Deamon, die einem Wechselbad gleich auf Katy niedergehen. Es ist als wäre man wieder sieben auf dem Schulhof und der Junge, der dich am schlimmsten kneift, liebt dich am meisten. Vielleicht gehöre ich einfach nicht mehr in die Zielgruppe. Innovativ fand ich hingegen das Alienkonzept. Lichtwesen die in menschlichen Körpern unter uns Leben, weil ihr Heimatplanet nicht mehr existiert und die durch die Anwendung ihrer Fähigkeiten Energie auf denjenigen übertragen, der davon betroffen ist. Ebenso interessant war, dass die Aliens egal welcher Rasse immer als Mehrlinge auftreten. Dieser Umstand bietet enorme Möglichkeiten weiterer Plotentfaltungen. Ich bin gespannt ob die Autorin diese auch in vollem Umfang ausschöpft. Die Charaktere waren mir weder enorm sympathisch noch habe ich irgendwelche Antipathien entwickelt. Vielleicht ist das auch ein Grund, warum mich die Geschichte sowohl in die eine als auch in die andere Richtung nicht übermäßig emotional berührt hat, aber bei Twilight hat mich auch erst der zweite Teil so richtig vom Hocker gerissen.

Ich habe Onyx schon auf meinem SUB zu liegen und bin gespannt zu erfahren, ob ich mich wie bei Stephenie Meyers eher vom zweiten Teil anfixen lasse oder ob es bei der Obsidian Reihe eher bei seichter Unterhaltung bleiben wird, die mich über die Lektüre hinaus nicht weiter beschäftigen wird.
