What Members Thought

This is teenager novel written from the perspective of a girl, Melinda, in grade nine. Throughout the book, it alludes to a horrible event that happened during the summer before starting high school. All of her peers blame Melinda for the outcome, and all of a sudden Melinda is ostracized and finds herself without any friends. By the end of the book (and the end of grade nine), the truth comes out.

WOW! I just finished listening to Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and it was wonderful! I loved Melinda's voice: she is funny and authentic with her circumstances in life, particularly as a freshman in high school. It reminded me again of how, if given a life do-over, I would not choose the high school years. Great listen!!

The subject matter (teen rape) is very serious and is handled well by this master YA author.
Unfortunately, I think my reading experience was tainted by real world stress.
LHA is a talented author and tackles a wide range of subjects from serious to light. She has yet to misstep for me so my recommendation is: You can't go wrong reading anything of LHA's. ...more
