I first read this book when I was in high school, back when dinosaurs walked the earth, people still thought digital watches were a pretty cool idea, and mobile phones were the size of a suitcase.
I enjoyed it at least as much this time. Humor is subjective, and I still find it bloody hilarious! If you don't enjoy Monty Python-esque British humor it may not be your cup of Earl Grey, but it still works for me! Hilarious - had me laughing out loud many times. So quirky & random. I would probably rate it just under 4 stars if that were possible. Although I really liked it, I probably won't read the rest of the series - it's too frustrating not to have a conclusion about anything, & I don't imagine the rest of the books will help with that.
I would also recommend listening to the audio version. The one I listened to was narrated by the author, & he was excellent! ...more

From other reviews I know people found this book amusing but to me it's just stupid, idiotic and pointless crap.
Most of the conversations went like this. I guess it took the author a long time to come up with this dialogue as it's so stimulating. Not!
"Oh...er really."
"Oh yes."
"Ah, er..."
And at one point Trillian was a female and in the next paragraph, a male and then a female again. Didn't anyone edit this crap?

I've been meaning to read the entire Hitchhiker's Guide series of books for ages. This weekend I finally read the first at least! It was highly amusing, well written and clever. It was easy to read this book quickly because the pace keeps up and the witty and often sarcastic humor never ends. My reason for knocking it down to only a 4 star read is that, personally, I found the character development a bit lacking. I don't feel like I really understand or care deeply about any of the characters af

Arthur Dent is having a bad day when he discovers his house is set to be demolished for an overpass. Things get worse when his friend Ford Prefect turns out to be an alien who rescues Arthur from Earth right before it's destroyed by the Vogons to make an intergalactic overpass. The book is funny and it lets you discover the meaning of life, the universe and everything. My husband owned the complete set of the hitchhikers books and I first read them the year after he died. I remembered parts of t
