After reading all of the praise about The Shadow of the Wind, I fear that I may be hanged at dawn!

So much was said about the beautiful language, that I feel like a simple provincial. I thought that perhaps I was missing it, because I am ill equipped to read this in the romantic Spanish. But then someone who read it in English remarked on the "beautiful language", so I'm a yokel after all!

I don't remember what led me to this book but I'm glad I found it. This is more gothic/romantic style literature than mystery but it had bits of both elements and I wasn't really sure where it was going. I love the idea of a 'library of forgotten books' which is where the young boy Daniel first finds a book called "The Shadow of The Wind". He becomes fascinated by its author Julian Carax which leads to all kinds of intrigue and drama.

There were parts in this book that I loved and parts that I hated. The overall story was good but it was too complicated. There were too many times when I had to go back to verify or remember something that had happened earlier. Also parts of the story were told over and over from different voices. Overall too much redundancy.

Re-read. Better second time around. Must have been a low bio-rhythm in March 2011.

I really wanted to love this. And for the first 20 pages, I was sure I would. The writing sucked me in and I very quickly became invested in the characters and storyline. However, just as quickly, I then lost my investment and lost my interest. I don't know why. Potentially it's because it's a very densely written book, there's a lot that can happen within the space of just a couple of pages and if you blink you can miss a mention of a character who becomes important later. I was in it from the first to the last page. Such a lovely read. The writing alone captivated me. I am really able to appreciate literary artist like this. They are the ones that continue to give me the motivation I need to work on my own writing.
