I tried. The two earlier Dresden books were more interesting than this one. Grave Peril I thought was atrocious. It's mostly hells bells and women with their boobs described in painfully lengthy paragraphs. Even when the women are evil and are about to kill Dresden. Even when they're barely of age and stoned out of their minds against their will. I don't know, I guess I'm a little uncomfortable with that level of lecherousness. And please stop about old school chivalry. Chivalry is not about holding doors open for women and then carrying on a conversation to their boobs. Who will protect these ladies from this guy's eyes? (And they're all about to jump in bed with him with the least possible provocation. Give me a break!)

There's maybe 10 pages worth of plot. It's then needlessly convoluted because Dresden makes stupid decisions that lands him with half an ounce of magic that then contributes to making him weak and vulnerable until something enrages him (usually a woman being harmed) and then his magic swells (ha!) and he can beat the bad guys against all odds. And then it turns out that the bad guys that were beaten were either not beaten completely, or that they were just puppets and there are bigger bad guys to go after and now Dresden is weaker and more vulnerable because of all the magic that he just expended. Aaaiiee. I can't take much more of this.

However, James Marsters does a great job of reading it. I listened to about 90% of the book on audio and had to return it, and then I skipped through the next 10% of the ebook. I infinitely preferred the audio, even though the remaining 10% was the climactic endgame with not a single boob described (unless Lea made an appearance? Yes, I think she did, and also the vampire Bianca and Susan, so maybe three boobs were described. This is honestly miniscule for Dresden). The audio might just con me into reading the next. But then again, maybe I liked the first two books because I read them and not listened to the audio, which means I skipped over most of it but the plot. Hmm. ...more

5 magical Nevernever stars!

This is the best of the Dresden Files that I have read till date. I basked in its excitement, enjoyed my fill to the fullest, went on craving for more and more. Don’t I sound like a little hungry vampire in the making? If turning into one as such let me feed on alluring Dresden tales like this one, well well, count me in! :D

Vampires this time... I did enjoy the interactions but there still remains something elusive about the series that keeps it falling just short of truly hooking me. So many people I know love these series, and I love a lot of series that are in the same neighborhood to me as this one (ie M.Y.T.H. by Robert Asprin, or books by Alan Dean Foster) but.... keep missing the train!

I'm determined to catch it though and I will probably feel different about the early books once I do get hooked properly. ...more

I'm usually pretty happy with things not going the expected way in books. That being said, I hate the ending to this installment. I'm really bummed that it ended that way. *Sigh*. Oh well. I would probably rate this book four stars except I'm not really into women sexually... and Harry is way to into their body parts sometimes to keep my interest. That being said, I did have to put this book down for a while and it was easy to return to, so it can't all be bad and I certainly enjoyed it. ...more
