4 Mouse stars!

Allow me for the "Mouse"-y emphasis, because I'm biased as hell when a pup comes up in any story.

So as is expected, the story is moving ahead at an amazing pace. The book starts off with Harry and Thomas chasing monkey demons and all of their gooey poop- and it's is when Mouse-the-sweetheart happens (I'm so grateful for this, yay!). On the major plot, Harry is brought face to face with a mysterious entropy curse running loose after a film producer's life. The plot thickens with 4 Mouse stars!

So as is expected, the story is moving ahead at an amazing pace. The book starts off with Harry and Thomas chasing monkey demons and all of their gooey poop- and it's is when Mouse-the-sweetheart happens (I'm so grateful for this, yay!). On the major plot, Harry is brought face to face with a mysterious entropy curse running loose after a film producer's life. The plot thickens with the White Court people lurking in the vicinity of the curse. Added to it, Mavra and her Black minions are back in action to pursue Harry with dirty tricks and ambushes.

This book is more important from the point of view of Harry Dresden developing as a character, his past hidden in the shadowy depths for too long a time that is finally rising to life. More than Thomas's secret, what produced more effect was Ebenezar's shocking confession. It shook the very foundation of Harry's beliefs in his powers, replaced it with distrust and uncertainty. Somehow that is a very realistic approach. I dunno if Butcher tried a philosophical angle here as to how with the passage of time, life questions your faith in the pure and unstained basics of your life, but it shows. Had I read this as a teen, my reaction would have been restricted to one pole of a spectrum of emotions, namely anger and disbelief. However, because I'm reading it now, I only feel sad for Harry. I'd not say that what Ebenezar did was wrong. Any well-wisher in his place would have adopted the same line of action, especially after all that happened to Harry's mother. Yes, it would have turned out better if Ebenezar would have said it to Harry first hand, rather than him doubting it from the confrontation with Kincaid, but bad timing cannot be not anyone's fault.

I love how Harry's relationship with Murphy is progressing in this series, something I was looking forward to since the very first instalment. Character wise, I loved Thomas here; the soulgazing was one of the best parts of the book. Kincaid proved himself to be quite a dexterous professional and I admire his no-nonsense, straightforward nature.
And boy, can I stress enough on how Mister and Mouse saved the day! What I would not do to become a permanent resident in Harry's basement, lol! I have always liked Mister; Mouse's growling at vampires playing mind-hypnosis and grinning when Harry talked to the notched-ear pup made me transiently die of affection.

The ending went flat, however. Not upto the mark by Butcher standards. Also, tackling Mavra after releasing the hostages ended too soon, too easy.

Great development in the series. I can sense more bigger mysteries in the making from the subtle hints dropped here and there.

4 stars in all.

I do not like Harry Dresden. I keep reading these books because it's my husband's favorite series, so it's no one else's fault but my own. But this is miserable, Dresden is a sexist and righteous pig/prig and this is a plot that's tailored to describe every woman's body in considerable detail. You cannot describe yourself a chivalrous knight and still go around looking at every woman with that terrible male gaze. While I enjoy this series, I don't seem to be as big of a fan as most people. I know. I'm a downer. I didn't find this book as exciting as the previous ones. I love how there is a puppy addition and that we find out about a previously unknown brother and we learn quite a bit about Harry's mother, but otherwise, it was ok. ...more
