#1 in The Dresden Files paranormal mystery series

What a great start to a new-to-me series. I've heard good things about Harry Dresden, and I'm totally on board. I wasn't sure at first about James Marsters' narration, but he definitely grew on me, and now he IS the voice of Harry. I was worried about his fade-away voice (meaning he started by getting quieter as the sentence went on, and I sometimes had a hard time hearing him), but either I got used to it or he got better, because it didn't turn

With the reading of this novel I fell in love with Harry Dresden. He's such an outstanding hero filled with energy and creativity. Can't help but admire the author's imagination in developing this environment with a hero and supporting characters that seem to go on and on with new ones appearing every so often. I'm so glad I began reading the series. If readers like magic, excitement, aadventure, and a read filled with energy I can't help but recommend the series. However, if one is adverse to v ...more

An ok start. If I hadn't heard that these books were really good and seen that the remaining books have a higher rating than this one, I may not have continued, since there wasn't all that much that was special to me about this one. It was reasonably entertaining though, so I'm gonna continue to see what all the fuss is about. ...more

I have had this book on my TBR list for years. I am so glad that I finally took the time to read it. Harry is the only professional wizard listed in the Chicago phonebook. His relationship with the police through Special Investigations helps him pay his bills. When a couple is found murdered by a powerful magic, Harry is the first suspect. Excellent characters, compelling storyline. I think there is something about Harry that I could come to love. 4 stars

This was an ok start to this popular series.

I already like Harry, he's delightfully cynical and it's entertaining reading his thoughts on things. Also the surrounding characters are interesting as well and I'm curious as to what they'll be doing in future installments.

The story, unlike the character of Harry Dresden, however didn't hold my interest as much as I would have hoped. It was an ok story but I found myself drifting off occasionally and tempted by other books.

I've been told

I wish I had started this series a long time ago! My attention was caught pretty much from the very first page, and I didn't want to put the book down. It's very well written, and I really enjoyed Harry as a narrator, which is saying something since I typically prefer books that have a female narrator.

The main mystery is strong, and it kept me guessing, which is always nice. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of this series!
