When Ben comes out to their parents as non-binary, the last thing they are expecting to be kicked out of their house. With no-one to turn to, Ben gets in contact with their sister Hannah, who they haven't spoken to in over 10 years after Hannah turned her back on the family for good. Hannah takes them in and enrols them into the school her husband Thomas teaches at. At the new school, they meet Nathan, a charismatic student that takes Ben under his wing and tries to break them out of their shell. The two become close with Ben questioning their feelings for Nathan and struggles with their non-binary identity secret, and whether they should open up to Nathan.

First of all, can we talk about how beautiful this cover is? I'm loving the 2019 trend of the illustrated contemporary covers. There have been some beautiful covers this year, and this book is high on that list.

So I think this may be the first book I've read with a non-binary main character. Shocking, I know. But I don't think I've seen many books out there with non-binary characters full stop. As someone who knows very little about this subject, I would like to some books out there like this one. It definitely opened my eyes to the topic and helped educate me on it more.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't what I thought it would be. I thought the romance between Ben and Nathan would be more in the forefront. I really thought they would realise their feelings for each other a lot sooner in the book, but waiting for it to happen definitely kept me on my toes. This book was one of my most anticipated reads for the summer, so I'm upset that I didn't love it more. I think maybe because the subject was so deep and upsetting that I kept wanting to put it down and distance myself a little bit, which may have influenced my negative feelings towards it.

Saying that, I do believe this is an important story and we need more stories like this out in the mainstream. But unfortunately, I just didn't love this book. ...more
