Damn, a little dark and definitely some trigger warnings on mental health, rape, mutilation.

I loved the characters, the setting, and the mystery. I did guess the killer but the motives and stuff I didn’t guess.

Great story!

I hadn't heard of this one and honestly only read it because it was a BOTM. But, I'm so glad that I did! I really enjoyed it! I gave it 3.5 stars.

While Casey got on my nerves a lot, she did things that sad to say I would do by letting people take advantage of her feelings. I was so happy (view spoiler)

I was happy to finally get my hands on this novel. However, it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. I was able to predict a big part of the story about 1/4 of the way through, so as promising as it started, it wasn't as great as I had hoped it would be and the story took a direction that was just meh to me. I did like that it took place in Canada. I live in Alberta so it was cool to get the shout out ;)

Oh my goodness, what did I just read and why I have not read any of the series by Kelley Armstrong because I think I am a fan.

City of the Lost was chosen to be read in my book club as part of the May month. It a love at the first page for me as it sucked me in from the first sentence. Yes! It is one of the books that has the shocking factor and I am totally here for it.

City of the Lost was chosen to be read in my book club as part of the May month. It a love at the first page for me as it sucked me in from the first sentence. Yes! It is one of the books that has the shocking factor and I am totally here for it.

This masterpiece is thriller and is part of the Rockton series by Kelley Armstrong. It follows a female detective who finds herself in a city full of people who have something to ran from or somehow found themselves in the other side of the law. It is City of the Lost, my friends. Detective Casey Duncan/Butler has her own monsters in the closet and she is trying to outran her past. Her best friend happens to have some trouble with there ex-husband and Casey being an extremely loyal friend is determined to save Diana. Now they are in Rockton and it seems the danger is still lingering for both of them. Casey has to investigate the atrocious murder cases that will change their lives forever.
First of all, I loved the setting. It is eerily atmospheric and extremely realistic. Just thinking about this city that is like a haven for those seeking help and temporary refuge, gives me chills. Just think about not only having victims but also predators shoved in the segregated are near northern permafrost. Sounds like creepy place to me.

Casey Duncan/Butler was one of the most amazing female characters I have met recently. She is different in a sense of her complexity and depth. Her background makes her a perfect candidate for the detective's role in Rockton. She knows darkness and it seems she actually feels at peace in this chilly city of the lost. She is level-headed, extremely intelligent and compassionate towards those in need of her help. Because of her past she has these self-loathing tendencies where she puts other's before her as she feels like she doesn't deserve any good in life. But she is so precious and so unaware of her incredible charm. I am a HUGE fan of Detective Butler. She is inspiring me on another level. I don't even know if I can her justice with this review.
Erik Dalton is another amazing character that stole the show and left me fawning over him even after I finished the book. He is this unapologetic, rude and fiercely straightforward sheriff of the city of Rockton who is not only handing the whole city but also is the only original resident. He is determined to find the murderer who harasses his resident. He also is very determined to dislike Casey when it she comes to Rockton. Is it hidden attraction or does he know something that makes him biased. Now for that you got to read to find out. The one thing I am sure of is that Erik is an amazing character with layers on layers to uncover.
The mystery of the story was not predictable and delivered that shock factor marvelously. Being an avid reader and having quite an extensive experience with science-fiction and fantasy genres, some tropes have become very predictable and it is hard to surprise me. However, City of the Lost did not fail to shock me and give me all the feels. I fully enjoyed the ride and intend to continue with the series.
