I read this book right after the previous one. While I still consider it excellent, I liked the first book in this series more. This one was a bit different, and in my opinion, more conventional in many ways.

This book is a logical continuation of the previous one, starting where the previous book ended. In terms of the plot, it is quite consistent with the previous book. The plot is good, but as I mentioned, probably more conventional. What I liked about the first book is that although Gwen is t I read this book right after the previous one. While I still consider it excellent, I liked the first book in this series more. This one was a bit different, and in my opinion, more conventional in many ways.

This book is a logical continuation of the previous one, starting where the previous book ended. In terms of the plot, it is quite consistent with the previous book. The plot is good, but as I mentioned, probably more conventional. What I liked about the first book is that although Gwen is the serial murderer's ex-wife, the book did not focus directly on the typical theme of escaping from a revengeful ex-husband. Of course, this book is different. Still, I like that this is more of a game between Gwen and her husband than a typical plot where she runs away and he chases her.

There are also some other themes frequently used by other authors to add some drama to the story. Like the whole Connor story, for example. I wasn't a fan of this solution as it is quite predictable and not very unique if you've read a few other thrillers of this type. This also applies to the justifiable fall in Gwen and Sam's relationship. Sam and Gwen started something like a relationship in the previous book, but what happened in this one is something I dislike most about my books - they had arguments and to some extent parted ways. I always find this a rather cheap trick to get drama, but it’s more of a personal preference. That doesn't mean I didn't like this book; it's great, I just think it's a little less creative than the last one.

In the first book, the author built a wonderful atmosphere of danger and being watched. This is also the case here, though maybe not to that degree. But in addition, we have the feeling of being hounded without being able to escape. These are the strong emotions of Gwen that we can definitely feel through the pages.

The last thing that didn't work for me, which is completely my preference, is the multiple perspectives. It is not my favorite form, and here it also distracted me from what interested me the most. In the first book, we only hear Gwen's voice, and that was fine. Of course, I can understand why the author had to use more than one POV - the plotline absolutely requires it. But that's the limitation of the first-person narrative, and that's why I prefer the third-person narrative. Plus, I don't always like to be in the heads of all these characters. Here, the perspective of Gwen and Sam would have been enough for me, but the kids were already disturbing me.

Despite all that I wrote above, it is an excellent book. It's a great, suspenseful story, even if some components are a bit predictable. I will certainly also read the next book in this series.

Dabei schafft sie sich aber mächtige Feinde, die nicht davor zurückschrecken, gefälschte Videobeweise zu generieren. Ein besonders perfides zeigt, wie sie ihrem Mann bei der Folter einer jungen Frau hilft. Es ist so echt, dass sogar Sam an ihr zu zweifeln beginnt, auch ihre Kinder fallen auf die Charade herein und werfen sie den Löwen zum Fraß vor. Die Rettung gelingt in letzter Minute und endlich kann ihr der Serienmörder Mel, mit dem sie einst verheiratet war, nichts mehr antun.

Der erste Teil war schon rasant, aber Killmann Creek nimmt noch einmal richtig Fahrt auf. Insbesondere die angeblichen Beweise lassen die Spannung ins Ermessliche steigen. Auch wenn ich nie an Gwen gezweifelt habe. Mir blutete nur das Herz, als ich bemerkte, dass sogar ihre Kinder bereit sind, sie fallen zu lassen, weil sie angeblich an den Morden der jungen Frauen beteiligt gewesen sein soll. Die Kinder stehen sehr im Vordergrund. Insbesondere Conner, der sich nur an einen liebenden Vater erinnern kann, den er nicht mit dem Bild des grausamen Serienmörders in Verbindung bringen kann. Nur zu bereitwillig gibt er die sorgsam geplante Tarnung auf, um endlich wieder ein Stück Normalität zu erleben. Sein Vater nutzt diese Liebe schamlos aus und ist sogar bereit ihn zu opfern. Seine große Schwester ist ihm auch keine große Hilfe, da sie gerade mit sich selbst und ihren Gefühlen für ihre beste Freundin hadert. Gefallen hat mir auch, dass die Autorin es schafft eine gewissen Verbundenheit, aber auch eine unterschwellige Spannung zwischen Gwen und Sam zu erschaffen. Sam traumatisiert vom Tod seiner Schwester durch Melvin, braucht Zeit um Vertrauen in Gwen zu fassen. Gerade die Videobeweise erschüttern dies sehr stark, aber letztendlich besinnt er sich und vertraut seinem Bauchgefühl mehr als seinen Augen. Es hat Spaß gemacht, wieder auf Gwen und ihre Kinder zu treffen. Hat sie schon im ersten Teil beide wie eine Löwin verteidigt, wird sie in diesem Teil zur Furie. Sie lässt nicht zu, dass das Böse was sich so allumfassend in ihren Alltag gedrängt hat, noch mehr Raum einnimmt und das bewundere ich so an dieser Figur. Auch wenn ein bisschen viel auf einmal geschieht und es manchmal unglaubwürdig wird, habe ich die Lektüre doch sehr genossen.

Ein dritter Band ist schon in Aussicht gestellt und ich bin supergespannt wie es weitergeht im Leben von Gwen. Haben sie und Sam eine Zukunft und werden ihre Kinder endlich einen Platz haben, an dem sie so etwas wie Sicherheit verspüren? ...more

Gut punch in the middle of this book. I do not want to ruin anything but man Gwen becomes an island and it was so difficult to read that part. I am a bit torn about the end. There is this long build up for two books but then the end seemed rushed.

Will read book 3 just to revisit the characters. Javi is my favorite, he needs his own book.
