This was such a different experience compared to the first book of the series. I mean, I liked The Thief, but it wasn't jaw droppingly amazing or anything. Mostly I wanted to deck Gen. But Gen in this book - he's somehow younger seeming even though he has a good growth arc, definitely more vulnerable, and very whiny. Loved it!
Turner does a marvellous job in creating a fantastical landscape rich with history and mythology and authentic characters. The storyline is intricate and even though I suspected what would happen in the end, it didn't happen in the way I thought it would. A surprise lurks behind every corner and makes the reader eager to turn the page.

It has been so long since I read the first one I had a bit of a time remembering what Eugenides stole and why. Now he is back and hiding in a castle and the queen is flushing him out. Two countries will go to war, two will be allies and a third is waiting to pick up the pieces. Engaging and interesting enough to keep my attention now to look for the next book in the series.
