In his debut novel, Orange explores the world of today’s Urban Indian; people who may be registered with a tribe in Oklahoma or New Mexico, while living in Oakland California. These are people who struggle with the issues of the urban poor, while also trying to work against stereotype, and still connect with and celebrate their native culture.

3.5 stars. The Prologue and first chapter were disturbing to me and I wondered if I was going to regret having to read this book for book club. Each chapter was told by a different character with a different voice. This book has won all sorts of awards (including nominations for the Pulitzer and National Book Award) but just because it is unusual doesn't mean it's a great book.

Wow. The pattern of short takes on different lives, some seen from childhood, others picked up later, some compassionate and generous, others closed off, selfish, maybe even evil. Everyone is going to intersect at the Los Angeles Powwow, and given that one set is planning to show up with guns, I started to get very worried about these people. Orange had made me care.

4-1/2 stars. The prologue told me this was a book with some "meat" to it. Written in the voice of the urban Indian, it made me reconsider some issues. It is a very discussable book.
