Ashen Winter was just very hard to get into. The first book in this series was ok as well, it's just nothing to really write home about.
Alex, our MC, was pretty much a huge pain in the ass and I have no idea why Darla did not beat the crud out of him. Several times he put their lives in danger. Not just oops, but "Holy Shit were going to die" kinda danger. In the first book he was such a clueless suburban boy and in the second book he still seemed to be. Unfortunately, about halfway through this book, I'd had enough. And I'll explain why:
Alex has learned basically nothing since Yellowstone erupted. He makes terrible survival decisions constantly, even when Darla points out it's a bad idea. It doesn't feel like he's grown during his trials and tribulations. As he set out to perform X, Y, and Z, I discovered I really didn't care whether he succeeded or failed. I discovered I wasn't even curious.

This is the best second book in a trilogy I've ever read. It's clear that Mr. Mullin really knew where he was going because this book was so exciting and action packed that I had my heart in my mouth for like 20 chapters straight. Well done!
If you read the previous book and know how it ended, you wouldn't be surprised that in this one Alex and Darla go back to Iowa to look for his parents. In the road they learn how far some people are willing to go to survive. The societal breakdown and the law ...more

It took me awhile to get through this, one because its big, two because I only had it on my tablet, and three because I was also reading like 11 other books while reading this one. I did really like this book, I like this series because its a dystopian series because its the beginning of things falling apart. I feel like a lot of the time we are thrown into this dismal world where all the rules are changed. Here its our world and we watch as one by one the rules are changed. I love that this cou

Wow! The twist in this book were so good! I really only saw a few coming. Can’t wait to see how this trilogy ends in the next book!
