I wish I could like Tamora Pierce's books more than I do. They have all the right elements. In this one, Beka Cooper is a strong female teenage protagonist, surrounded by supportive friends, as she tries to make her way in her newly-chosen profession and to solve the mysteries of things that are going very wrong in town. What's not to like?

For the most part I enjoyed this book however it was extremely repetitive and rather boring at times. The main characters - Beka, Tunstall and Goodwin - are basically cops and go out each evening to the roughest parts of town and stop crime from happening or kick ass when necessary. Then they go to dinner, kick some more ass and call it a day. In the mornings Beka listens to the dust tunnels and talks to pigeons...day after day after day. This was a really good book. I really liked Beka Cooper's character. She is a real winner. Her Dogs are good too. And I really liked some of the new friends she made along the way, even if they weren't always on the "right" side of the law.
