Mma Ramotswe is contacted by a woman who is sure she's adopted who wants to find her biological family. Mma Makutsi has trauma with a new bed. Mr. JLB Matekoni thinks there might be a cure for his adopted daughter who is in a wheelchair. Not much happens in these books. They are more about the main characters and Botswana than they are any sort of mystery. I've listened to most of the books but I read this one. I prefer the audiobook versions. I'll continue with the series but am in no rush to d ...more

2021: So many cases to solve in this outing, plus some wrestling with telling with the truth between Grace & Radi. Loved it again.
2010: This was another trip to Botswana to visit old friends. Mma Makutsi has some trouble with her fiance, Charlie saves the day, Mr. J.L.B Matekoni helps Motholeli, and Mma Ramotswe solves some mysteries. Satisfying and nice.

#9 in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

The first adjectives I think of to describe this series are pleasant and warm. This is such a nice easy-going series. There's not a lot of action, so if you like thrillers, you definitely won't care for this. And it's not even really a detective book in the usual sense or a police procedural. This series is so refreshing and so interesting. The culture of Africa is amazing. I found it interesting that the ladies are always drinking hot tea, even in the heat of the day and they remark that it is so appalling that Americans drink it with ice.

Alexander McCall Smith has a truly successful franchise with this series, and he deserves the adoration of his many fans – including me. I love Precious Ramotswe, Mma Makutsi, Mr J L B Matekoni and all the other characters in these gentle detective novels. There are no murders, but still plenty of answers to be found out. This one focuses on a lost family, some vaguely threatening letters, Mma Makutsi’s plans to marry Phuti Ratiphuti, and the hope that Motholeli’s condition can be improved. McCa ...more

Reading this was a relaxing and calming way to spend a couple hours. The language and characters are soothing and the mystery was heartfelt. The ongoing drama of Mma Makutsi's engagement, Charlie's slow growth to adulthood (he seemed.... helpful) and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni seeking a miracle cure were all wonderfully woven into a couple of cases that kept Mma Ramotswe busy. ...more
