Science fiction? A retelling of one of my favorite fairytales from when I was young? And an illness sweeping the world, seemingly without a cure? Oh goodness, that sounds like the trifecta when it comes to books tailored to me. But that's just the plot. Marissa Meyer topped all that off with characters and dialogue and wicked awesome writing to make this easily one of my favorite reads for the year.

Oh goodness, that sounds like the trifecta when it comes to books tailored to me. But that's just the plot. Marissa Meyer topped all that off with characters and dialogue and wicked awesome writing to make this easily one of my favorite reads for the year.

Cinder is a story about so much set to the backdrop of Cinderella. Yes, it's a Cinderella story, but it's so unique and well written that it feels more like a new story, rather than a retelling. The writing that Meyer put to the pages really made the difference between a retelling and a complete and utter re-imagining. I was absolutely blown away by the details and vivid descriptions. I saw New Beijing and everything Cinder encountered in my mind's eye, making it that much more of a rich reading experience.

This story was completely addictive, fast-paced, high-intensity and non-stop. From the very beginning, Meyer hits you in the forehead with a proverbial brick, demanding the reader to wake up and pay attention. The world(-and-moon)-building is absolute genius, the characters were all full to the brim with life and personality and the dialogue, both external and internal, was saturated with equal parts hilarity, calamity and individuality. Cinder is a whole new world (couldn't help but stuff in a tiny Disney reference), and Meyer does an excellent job of describing the science fiction elements. But it's done so in a way that was more show, rather than tell.

My only teensy complaint that prevents me from sending my rating over that coveted five+ mark is that the big reveal moment was incredibly predictable. I called it very early on in the book. I will say that several of the twists (and there are lots) were unexpected but the one that was meant to be a major wow moment was lackluster.

To say that I enjoyed Cinder is an understatement. I found the ending to be a great opening for the next books of this series without the heart-wrenching cliffhanger. Speaking of the next books, I cannot wait to get my hands on them. And if you've not picked up this book yet, I strongly urge you to do so. Story lovers worldwide will appreciate Cinder.
