I sat here debating whether to give The Ocean at the End of the Lane 3 or 4 Stars, so I split the difference. I clearly didn't love this novel as I did with Gaiman's novel, Neverwhere. But I didn't hate it either. For me there was "something" lacking in The Ocean at the End of the Lane that I can't put my finger on exactly what that something was when reading it. A dark fantasy novel as remembered by a middle-aged man during his life as a seven-year-old. Returning to the area where he grew up for a funeral, he makes a side trip, and in so doing, he remembers everything including the evil that entered the world.

His friend Lettie Hempstock is magical as is her mother Ginnie and her grandmother, and it is his friendship with Lettie that drives his memories.

I guess I am used to knowing exactly what type of beings I am dealing with in a story, that the fact that it is never really divulged who or what the Hempstocks were didn't sit right with me somehow. Also not knowing the name of the narrator left me a bit disconnected.

Still, those things didn't do much to keep me from being enraptured by the things the nameless boy went through. No one that age should have to endure so much. I

In this book, I really like the world building, the description, the characters....I think my issue is that his stuff is just so incredibly weird/esoteric. He is an excellent/fabulous/wonderful writer, he just sometimes loses me along the way with the oddness of his wo
