Jack and Mabel, a childless couple in their fifties, have moved to Alaska to avoid the sorrow of seeing happy families. But they haven't found the peace they were seeking and are slowly sinking under the grief, hard work, and poverty.

Wow, what a wonderful book! The writing is lovely, the story is magical, and it's a great discussion book for a book club. It is in my top 10 of books read in 2014 and I can't believe I didn't read it sooner. I highly recommend this book. ...more

As much as I wish it, "The Snow Child" is simply to incoherent and vague in its message to ever truly become interesting. The concept of losing a child in its early ages is of course an important emotion to be explored but Eowyn Ivey's take on the old russian fairytale of Snegurochka is far from being a version anyone will remember for very long. I thought it was a little slow at times, but I did enjoy reading this book and continue to think about the characters.
