A wonderful history of the Los Angeles Central Library with many chapters devoted to the catastrophic fire of 1986. Orlean intersperses the fire story with the chapters on the library's history and throws in several chapters about libraries in general so you get the opportunity while you're reading to change gears with each chapter so there aren't long sections that drag on if you aren't interested in the exact method used to salvage the waterlogged books after the fire.
