Bess encounters a wounded French soldier, apparently escaped from a German prisoner-of-war column, at a Base Hospital. Then she hears him speaking in fluent German. Her curiosity about him and her concern about the possibility that he is not who he appears to be leads her to investigate him while she is recovering from a gunshot wound of her own. It leads her to a decades-old crime. I liked this story particularly well as I enjoy the description of tracking down a cold case.
