Cathay Williams was a black woman who disguised herself as a man and served with the Buffalo Soldiers. The story is told from her first-person perspective and her character pulls no punches when relating the despicable ways that whites treated blacks and men treated women so that her life as a black woman during the Civil War and after was more difficult than most of us can readily imagine. A good story about a little-known part of black women's history.
