Sarah Waters wrote this back in the 1990s. I wanted to see if I liked it as much now as then. I did! Nancy Astley grows up in a small town in southern England. At 18, she falls in love with a male impersonator, Kitty Butler, at the local music hall. She follows Kitty to London as her dresser and later as part of her act.
