The best kind of Gothic novel, full of tragedy, an unreliable narrator, and never knowing exactly if things are as they seem. I'd never read this du Maurier before. Young Philip Ashley has been raised by his cousin Ambrose, a bachelor. Philip is heir to Ambrose's estate. Ambrose spends winters in Italy for his health and meets a cousin of theirs, the widow Rachel Sangalletti. He marries her, writes to Philip infrequently and alludes to mysterious goings-on, which he never explains. Then he dies.
