I’m so glad I finally was able to read this literary classic I’ve heard so many things about. Octavia Butler’s Kindred is unique in that it does not fit snugly into one literary box, but rather blends in several. It is a bit of science fiction, fantasy, slave narrative and social commentary and critique. Genres aside, Kindred is a powerfully written novel that explores race, gender, conflict, and a rather serious and rather bleak reminder of the United States’ past experience with slavery.

I have never read anything by Octavia Butler. Kindred is often labelled as a science fiction book but even Octavia Butler said there was no science in it. This is a book that speaks to the roots of a family and slavery. How do you balance the "freedom" of the 1970's with being owned, mistreated, whipped, and prejudiced against as a slave. Disturbing. Also, losing the arm between the centuries and time travel. Powerful and impactful.

I have been meaning to read this book for a really long time. I finally decided to pick it up after watching the new TV series, which I thought was excellent, and I ended up reading the entire book in one day because I could not put it down. This is a really interesting book. I was familiar with the general premise even before I watched the show, but I had no idea how it would actually play out.
