When I started this, I began to wonder if maybe I had already read it years ago and had just spaced out that I'd read it. It all seemed so vaguely familiar. I couldn't tell if it seemed familiar because Holmes is such a well know character & I've seen the tv shows, the movies etc. or if I'd read the book. It wasn't until Part II, when the reader is transported to a hokey third rate Western setting that I definitely knew I had not read this. Wow, talk about a tonal change. It really threw me, the

This was my first Holmes book and yes, I am hooked. For me this was a great introduction to how Watson and Holmes met and the backgrounds that created these fascinating men.
I really like both. Watson is so different from Holmes and is the more practical and immediately likeable.
I don't read a lot of mysteries and this was a very interesting start for me. Holmes and his observations seem so obvious after the fact and I liked being a passenger in his mind. In this tale, the part that the Mormons ...more

When audible.com first advertised that Stephen Fry had recorded the entire Sherlock library I immediately bought it. I have never read any of the books before but I was certain I would love it, especially as recorded by Fry. I didn't love this one though. I liked it, but I expected more. I am hopeful though that as I learn more about the character and see his complexities I will be more enthralled.

It's fun to read the genesis of a cultural icon; however, the story itself shows itself to be the product of a novice writer writing quickly. A ridiculously sentimental interlude in the American West that roundly bashes Mormons and Native Americans was so unexpected that it was kind of interesting--but wholly unnecessary to the plot. For people who love Holmes, he is at his Holmesiest. Watson's backstory is also fun to get--and for people who love the BBC series--the ability with which they were

2nd time reading, still 4 stars, although I think I enjoyed it a tad bit more than the first time
I am pretty sure the first I did not care much for part 2, but this time I was actually intrigued and involved and scared for those characters - maybe I completely erased the 2nd part from my head the first time and focused only on the 1st part, where we meet Sherlock and Watson and learn about how they started working together.
Anyway, I enjoyed it. I was expecting to like it less the second time, b ...more
