I first read this in high school and didn't appreciate it at the time as I had other things on my mind. I can't believe I waited this long to reread, but I'm glad I chose to revisit this classic via Audible as the Jake Gyllenhaal narration is fantastic. He gave each character a different voice which made it easy and effortless to follow along and the tone of his voice authentically mirrored the tone of the novel.

Ok I know the 'back' story to The Great Gatsby, I read the notes and I understand.....but the 'other' story has left me with a huge yawning chasm in the place my heart once occupied. Not many books do this; leave me feeling bereft that is, it's not as though I formed a strong attachment to any of the characters; I think it's more the story as a whole, read on the same 'shallow' level as the characters portrayed. I found it atmospheric, beautifully written, and poignant.

One member of book club suggested this title because she had never read it, and it's fun to occasionally revisit something from the old high school English list if only to see how much I've changed in relation to a particular text. F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic was worth the re-read.
Although I still struggled to imagine Gatsby on his own terms and not as Robert Redford in Jack Clayton's blown-out film from the 70s (one, I believe, we watched in class as a supplement to the book), the themes of t ...more

This is my second time reading "The Great Gatsby" and this time, as an adult. I'm torn between giving this 3 or 4 stars but I decided on four stars because (view spoiler) Fitzgerald can write some beautiful descriptions and they come across very sharp.

The Great Gatsby is an amazing novel that captures the early 1920s Jazzy age with amazing accuracy of the period of that time. If you enjoy American literature & history it’s definitely a must read. F. Scott Fitzgerald writing was exquisite & brilliant and the higher class of America is excellently portrayed. He has done a beautiful job in creating the setting & characters. As for Fitzgerald's characters, they will make you question a lot about everything you know or think that you know.

Like so many others I read this book years and years ago. I don't think I "understood" it then. I think the beauty/horror went right over my head. I'm sure it will haunt me for years.
